Hi all,
My birding observations of note over the past seven days included the following:
- 1 adult GLAUCOUS GULL, 1 Razorbill, 1 Black-legged Kittiwake, 12 Harlequin Ducks, etc, Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth, 3/29.
- an incredible total of 26 GADWALLS in Scarborough on 3/31 (with Luke Fultz), including 7 each at Pelreco Marsh and Eastern Road Trail, and 12 in Prout's Pond! Probably a single-day high count for me in Maine.
- 1 drake "EURASIAN" GREEN-WINGED TEAL x "AMERICAN" GREEN-WINGED TEAL HYBRID, Wharton Point, Brunswick, 4/1.
And my person first-of-years/first-of-springs this week were as follows:
- 1 Great Blue Heron (first migrant of spring), Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch, 3/28.
- 1 Double-crested Cormorant, fly-over at Village Crossings, Cape Elizabeth, 3/29.
- 1 Eastern Meadowlark, Spurwink Marsh, Cape Elizabeth, 3/29.
- 1 Savannah Sparrow (first migrant of spring), Ricker Farm Trail, Lisbon, 3/30 (with Jeannette).
- 4 Great Egrets, Scarborough Marsh, 3/31 (with Luke Fultz).
- 1 Greater Yellowlegs, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 3/31 (with Luke Fultz).
- 3 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, Wharton Point, Brunswick, 4/1.
- 1 Fox Sparrow, our yard in Pownal, 4/2.
Meanwhile, I have put a few of my thoughts about birds and birding during a pandemic together in a blog (in case you are really bored) here: https://mebirdingfieldnotes.blog/2020/04/02/birding-a-pandemic-the-well-we-might-as-well-go-birding-kinda-perspective/
Bird safe,
Derek
