[Maine-birds] Eurasian Teal at Wharton Point

This afternoon at Wharton Point in Brunswick, a handsome adult male Eurasian Teal was foraging with his equally handsome cousin "American" Green-winged Teal.  The birds were foraging in shallow water close to shore near the boat landing with over 400 American Black Ducks.  It was nice to compare the two Teal subspecies side-by-side.

While the Eurasian Teal was making a show, a predator / prey drama was playing out in the cove just to the east of Wharton Point.  An adult Bald Eagle was doing its best to grab a black duck in the shallow water.  As large as it is, the eagle managed to do some nifty hovering action several feet above the duck, which was doing its best "diving" action.  The duck managed to flop under water a half dozen times just before the eagle could grab it.  Fortunately for the duck, the eagle couldn't keep up such expenditures of energy, and soon abandoned the chase.

Good birding,

Gordon
