----------------------------------------------------------------------

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end   time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter:        Katrina Fenton

Observers:        Alan McKelvy

Visitors:
56, among them first-time visitors, photographers, and leprechaun hunters.
No leprechauns were sighted over the course of today's count.

Weather:
Light winds in the morning replaced by a brisk blast from the northwest.
The pines on the north side of the mountain helped shield the summit, but
migrant raptors had to seek alternate shelter. Temperatures were a bit
warmer than predicted, rising high enough to thaw the ice puddles on the
mountaintop. Clear skies clouded to partly cloudy then cleared up again.

Raptor Observations:
More Turkey Vultures on the move today, though some locals apear to have
moved in, circling the summit only to drift south in the afternoon. Another
beautiful look at an adult Northern Goshawk today as it rose in front of
the mountain just below eye-level, banking in the wind before racing
northward.

Non-raptor Observations:
The word was out and migrants were on the move. A flock of Horned Larks
crested the summit, while five scoters vanished beyond the pines high above
them. The first trickle of blackbird migration was detected today, soon to
become a flood of birds moving through the morning skies in the next couple
of weeks.

Non-raptor migrants:
Canada Goose- 15
scoter sp.- 5
Red-winged Blackbird- 20
blackbird sp- 4
American Crow- 10
Horned Lark- 20
European Starling-3
Common Redpole- 1
passerine sp.- 12

Predictions:
Light westerly winds seem to be the order of the day. Temperatures will
start off around 20, warming to the low 30s by the afternoon. Skies will be
mostly clear with a few clouds popping up, mainly in the afternoon. All in
all, it should be a much better travel day for raptors without today's
strong winds to contend with.
