[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 2/23-3/1.

Hi all,

 

Observations of note by me in the past seven days included:

- 6 Lesser Scaup, Sandy Point, Cousin's Island, Yarmouth, 2/23 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

- 2 HERMIT THRUSHES, Fort Foster, Kittery, 2/26 (with Jeannette).

- 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 4 AMERICAN PIPITS, and 22 Horned Larks, Seapoint Beach, Kittery, 2/26 (with Jeannette).

- 6 CANVASBACKS (4 drakes and 1 hen) continue in the Presumpscot River, as viewed from Rte 9 in Falmouth, through at least 2/28.

- 1 1st winter Iceland Gull, Trundy Point, Cape Elizabeth, 2/28 (with Doug Hitchcox),

- 1 lt morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continues, Richmond Island, Cape Elizabeth as viewed from Two Lights State Park, 2/28 (with Doug Hitchcox).

- 1 pair Greater Scaup, Two Lights State Park, Cape Elizabeth, 2/28 (with Doug Hitchcox).

- 32 Brant, Kettle Cove, Cape Elizabeth, 2/28 (with Doug Hitchcox).

- 12-16 1st winter, 1 2nd winter, and 1 adult Iceland Gulls, Portland Harbor, 2/28 (with Doug Hitchcox).

- 1 Razorbill, way up the Fore River at the Casco Bay Bridge, 2/28 (with Doug Hitchcox).

- 1 1st-winter Glaucous and 3 Iceland (one each of 1st, 2nd, and Adult) Gulls, Hatch Hill Landfill, Augusta, 3/1.

- 1 male Red-winged Blackbird (FOY), feeders here at the store, 3/1.

 

- A flock of 200+ Common Redpolls arrived in our Pownal yard on the morning of the 28th.  A single HOARY REDPOLL was among them (poor photos), as was a presumed "GREENLAND" COMMON REDPOLL (ssp rostrata).    The HOARY returned today, 3/1, and Jeannette got a few quick photos, but she only succeeded in photographing a possible/probable rostrata - not the massive, dark brown bird from the day before. 

 

Although I did not make it to Westbrook's Riverbank Park this week to check on the mystery white-winged gull or the overwintering Northern Shoveler, I did add upgraded photos of the gull to the photo suite found here:
