[Maine-birds] Coopers Hawk vs. red squirrel

A couple of days ago I noticed a young Coopers Hawk behaving oddly in
my yard. It was on a pine tree that has been dead so long that it
just as a few stubs of branches projecting from the trunk. It kept
hopping from branch to branch and craning its neck up, looking for
something. I finally realized there was a red squirrel scurrying up
and down the trunk, that was capturing the hawk's attention. But
after about 5 minutes the hawk disappeared, as did the squirrel. I
don't think it caught the squirrel, but could be wrong about that/
So I have a few questions:
1. Do Coopers Hawks like to eat red squirrels?
2. Why was the hawk having such a hard time catching the squirrel -
inexperience? or an inability to maneuver in that situation?
Thanks,
Anne Williams in Lewiston
