On my walk this evening there was a falcon teed up in a tree in the middle of a big field, backlit so I couldn't make out features. I think it was a kestrel because it was flicking its tail. Do merlins flick their tails?
If it was a kestrel, it is doubly welcome because I have missed my neighborhood pair for the last year (they disappeared halfway through breeding season last year). Wondering if it might be one of them or one of their offspring.
