[Maine-birds] LESSER GOLDFINCH in Abbot, Piscataquis Co.

Ellen Blanchard found a adult male Lesser Goldfinch (black-backed form) at her camp in Abbot. Cheryl Ring confirmed the bird today. Birders can attempt to see the bird **only tomorrow and Friday** as the camp is slated for demolition next week.

Ellen requests birders arrive no earlier than 8:30 a.m. and after the morning visit not expect to see the bird in the afternoon before 5:00 p.m. The bird has been seen since Monday and has followed this pattern. Regardless, please arrive no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

Location: 189 Pond Road, Abbot. The camp road is exactly 5.0 miles west on Pond Road from Highway 15 north of Abbot Village (DeLorme map 3, B 3-4). Pond Road makes a sharp right angle turn to the north 5.0 miles, and Ellen's camp drive is right there at the north end of the paved curve.

PARKING: please park on the dirt side road that runs north-south at this point. The camp is a beige building ahead (west) down the driveway. The feeders where the bird visits are straight ahead (left/south) of the camp. Ellen will provide chairs where birders can wait.

The bird stages in adjacent birches and frequently calls and sings. Listen for the sour, down-slurred 'dee-oo' interspersed with the song, which is a jumbled of goldfinch sounds interspersed with mimic calls and songs of other species.

This is the third record for Maine. Amazingly, the last one was also interior, north-central Maine at Clifton, Penobscot County, in July 2009. Prior to that, a bird wintered at Georgetown, Sagadahoc County, December 1992 to April 1993. See records here:

This is a review species, and the Maine Bird Records Committee request documentation.

Thanks Cheryl, and well-done Ellen!
