[Maine-birds] Re: (Maine Birds) Mount Desert Island Birds: Black Scoter and Sea Smoke!

I was just sent this excellent overview about "Hoary" vs "Common"  Redpoll    http://blog.aba.org/2013/01/open-mic-redpolls.html

If you think you saw a Hoary... perhaps you better read this article....  I have always suspected that there is a bit of lore with this species.

Comments: Checking the coastal edge in below Zero temperatures. I am amazed that the birds are actively feeding , flying and frolicking on the water. Evolution is an amazing thing! How do they stay warm? Where do they find respite from the cold?   It is an OMG Cold day.   More respect than ever for Avian evolution!!

Comments: A Bald Eagle was harassing the Herring Gulls on the Blackwood's side of Otter Cove. Many Herring Gulls spooked by the Eagle were forced to fly. The Eagle was chasing a Herring Gull (or visa verse) than broke off and flew back out of sight. The sea smoke today is thick and whipping around on strong northerly winds.. some cold outside!
