Mount Desert Island Birds:  RUSTY BLACKBIRD and Red-bellied Woodpecker

Smolley/Monet Feeder Complex, Hancock, US-ME
Jan 26, 2013 9:45 AM - 11:30 AM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: Eddie and Edna Monet and myself photographing and watching a Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus) which she first noticed and photographed on January 24 2013. It appears to be a single bird mixing with starlings and the complex assemblage in this area of Town Hill. The bird appears to be a female in an alternate molt stage and with some scattered black feathering around the eye. This Rusty Blackbird was recognized by its rusty feather edges, pale yellow eye and buffy light supercilium. First found in a thicket before moving underneath a well stocked feeder with peanuts and an assortment of seed types. The other important find was a Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) male. These woodpeckers are become increasingly common at Bird Feeders around the MDI and the region. Photos of both species will be posted on Flickr asap.
