[Maine-birds] Fw: eBird Report - Cape Road Hotspot, Jul 11, 2013 Down East Nature Tours Bar Harbor Maine

Hello All,

Caspian Tern was the correct species seen at the Cape Road on July 11 NOT Royal Tern which I had reported initially... sorry about the mix-up if any.

Comments:     Marina and Bill Horan and John and Johnnie Skelton from NY and Georgia.  This was our last but best stop as we stood looking into the fog which has wrapped the Islands for days.  Out of the fog I heard fist a familiar call of a Caspian Tern and than we saw three birds approaching as we struggled to get our camera gear out.  Saying a little prayer the birds circled back directly over us for some fabulous shots from underneath a Caspian Tern . These will be posted on Acadia Birding Festival facebook page.
20 species

Herring Gull (Larus argentatus)  5
Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia)  3     What appeared to be two adults and 1 immature bird PHOTOS TAKEN  and I'll post them to Acadia Birding Festival Facebook page. Two adults clearly show extended forked tail feathers extending beyond the tail in the photos with the immature bird lacking those feathers and that defined plumage. Great looks as they circled and than circled again over us flying towards the Northeast .
Common Tern (Sterna hirundo)  13     several birds came into the upper cove looking for sea run fish
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)  2
Alder Flycatcher (Empidonax alnorum)  1
Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus)  2
American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos)  4
Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica)  1
Swainson's Thrush (Catharus ustulatus)  2     this is the first time I have had Swainson's Thrush at this location. I did also hear a male calling from the forest higher up on the ridgeline but neve haave I heard them calling so close to the ocean. One male was about 25 feet from us at one point near the Cape Road. It also began to call softly near us.
American Robin (Turdus migratorius)  2
Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis)  2
Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum)  2
Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia)  1     great looks at this calling male hiding near a shrub
