Two Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are currently hanging out in the Sugar Maple behind my house in Kennebunk (Park Street). The photos below show both birds on the tree and a side-by-side comparison. Both are immature birds, but one has a much more distinct head pattern and some red on the forehead. The brighter birds has been visiting since the beginning of January, while the second YBSA appeared towards the end of January. One or both of these birds makes an appearance once or twice a week on average. Not sure how they are getting the sap to run in 20 degree weather when my taps are frozen solid.
Look closely! Both birds are present in this shot.
