10 people visited the Hawkwatch today.
Weather:
Winds today were out of the south, with a little westerly influence in the morning hours. The day started out pleasantly with light winds, but the sea breeze really began howl after the 3rd hour. The sun and temperatures in the 30s and 40s could not override the chilliness of the winds.
Raptor Observations:
Most of the raptor activity was during the first half of the day with another decent push of Turkey Vultures. They will begin to thin out as migrants very soon. Local birds were not too active, but a pair of Red-tailed Hawks, one Bald Eagle, and one Red-shouldered Hawk were observed here and there.
Non-raptor Observations:
28 species were seen or heard from the summit today. Non-raptor migrants were not in abundance, but we did count: 87 blackbird sp. 22 Canada Geese 16 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS 9 American Robins 5 Common Grackles 2 Common Mergansers 2 Eastern Bluebirds 2 American Goldfinches
Predictions:
Strong coastal storm will undergo cyclogenesis tonight off the mid-Atlantic coast and rapidly move northeast. While it will stay out to sea, the storm is large enough to send precipitation our way by morning. Rain and/or snow will no doubt delay the start of the count, however it is currently forecasted to clear out my late morning. A WIND ADVISORY has been posted for the afternoon and by protocol we close the count. However, southwest winds are expected between the end of precipitation and beginning of wind advisory which could yield a couple of hours of counting if we are being overly optimistic. The wind forecast is also currently jeopardizing Thursday's count.
