Got a chance to check the mouth of the Abagadasset River in Bowdoinham from Browns Point Rd late in the day on Saturday (3/21/20). Pretty darn chilly but about 40 Green-winged Teal and 4 Northern Pintail among the 400 or so Mallards and American Black Ducks.
Further upriver on the same day, there were 3 American Wigeon in South Gardiner, visible from the north end of Riverside Road near the railroad tracks.
On Sunday morning (3/22/20), Allison and I counted an amazing total of 700 Common Mergansers from under the Richmond-Dresden bridge (the pullout on the Dresden side) with 350 together north of the bridge and 400 south of the bridge drifting downriver eventually between Swan Island and the town of Richmond. Amazing sight but this is the normal time when we see the large flocks massing up before they head north and disperse across their breeding grounds. There was also a pair of Northern Pintail and a pair of Green-winged Teal nestled in with flocks of Mallards and American Black Ducks that we could see over against the Richmond shore.
And two female-plumaged Purple Finches showed up at our backyard feeders in Gardiner this morning (3/23/20). We hadn’t had any since last fall.
