Visitors:
16 people visited the hawk watch today. The park seems to be quite active with schools and many businesses closed due to COVID-19
Weather:
The day started out with light northwest winds, clear skies, and excellent visibility. The winds remained light out of the northwest through the morning into early afternoon quickly shifting to the southwest and eventually south by the end of the day's count. Some intermittent cloud cover occurred mid-day. Temperatures started out about freezing, steadily rising through the day to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
Raptor Observations:
Another good number of individuals moving through the day. A lot of today's migrants were Turkey Vultures, however, we also counted a decent number of Bald Eagles, Red-shouldered Hawks, and Red-tailed Hawks. The bulk of today's Red-shouldered migration seemed to occur in the mid-morning hours. Many individuals were far away, although one Northern Goshawk gave us a show right over the summit in the second hour of the count.
Non-raptor Observations:
Not a large number of non-raptor migrants today although we did see a few groups of American Goldfinches moving through. The day ended with 22 species. Species deemed migrating included: 11 European Starlings 13 American Goldfinches 4 Blackbird sp. 1 Purple Finch 2 Red-wing Blackbirds 2 Common Grackle 14 Canada Geese
Predictions:
Temperatures for tomorrow look to stay pretty consistent through the day, starting out in the upper 30s and only reaching the low 40s. Winds out of the southeast in the morning may push a lot of birds inland before they reach Bradbury Mountain. The next two days look to be variable in precipitation potential, which may limit observation time at the hawk watch. If it's not raining, birds could be moving ahead of the approaching cold front predicted for Friday.
