Re: [Maine-birds] Possible Black-Tailed Gull - Portland

Laura and I spent a little while at the Portland Fish Pier before snow killed the visibility.  Ran into / heard about several others looking at different sites along the waterfront.

Not many gulls really compared to some visits.  We did see a 3rd winter Herring Gull that was quite "adult-looking" with gray mantle and coverts (but muddy pale gray flight feathers peaking through) that had a black subterminal band.  Too big to be a Black-tailed Gull in any event.

We did see a first winter Iceland Gull roosting on a roof nearby.

None of this is to say there isn't something rare around, just that we didn't find it.

Marion Zimmerman just called and described an adult plumaged large larus gull with a black band near the tip of the tail. She saw the bird in flight down at Union Wharf on Commercial St in downtown Portland.

Could be worth checking the waterfront!

Bird haahd,
