I spent a bit of time checking around the southern section of the
island this afternoon.
The CATBIRDS seem to have completely left and I saw only one
SWAINSON'S THRUSH and one OVENBIRD.
Generally, things seem little changed from yesterday except for a few
flycatchers (unconfirmed species).
There a couple PARULAS & female REDSTARTS, as well as one or two
KINGBIRDS, a female BLUEBIRD and a sprinkling of MAGNOLIA, YELLOW &
COMMON YELLOWTHROATS.
Most notable because of numbers and visibility are the SAVANNAH
SPARROWS. Every few yards you encounter one on territory.
EIDERS are selecting nest sites and begining to lay. Still lots of
males around.
TERNS were back yesterday. A few stayed overnight and it was active
here until late afternoon. Nice to see the activity but there's no
reason to expect breeding success.
One note of special interest was a ROSEATE TERN calling.
Two late season species were PURPLE SANDPIPER (4) and HARLEQUIN DUCK
(1 male).
Our summer shorebird, the SPOTTED SANDPIPER, is back although the
number of Spotties seems to be on the low side this year. Nonetheless
I found 3 nest locations with little effort. The one nest that I
checked holds 4 eggs.
