[Maine-birds] Two Upcoming Free Events of Interest

Hi all,
We have two upcoming free events here at Freeport Wild Bird Supply that I thought might be of interest to members of the list:
1) LEICA DAY, Wednesday, May 30th.

We'll be hosting Cameron Cox of Leica Sports Optics for a day of events:
a) Birdwalk. 8:00-10:00/10:30am. Meet at the store for a short carpool to a local park of seasonal interest . . . just like every Saturday morning!  He'll hang aroung to chat about birds, Leica, and everything else over free coffee and refreshments afterwards.

b) Visit with Cameron 4:00-6:00pm at the store to check out new Leica products and test drive a pair of binoculars, spotting scope, or both.

c) Evening Program: 6:30 to 7:30pm: A BIRDER'S GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHY
For the birder that wants to take photos while still watching birds there are three main choices: a super zoom camera, a digital SLR with a medium length telephoto lens (300-400mm) that can be used without a tripod, or digiscoping. We will discuss the advantages and drawbacks of each and look at photos taken with each type of camera. This is perfect for those considering photography or have recently embarked into it. To keep things simple we will not cover photograph with long lenses (500-800mm) or get into the minutia of photography technique. To keep things interesting, beautiful photos of birds and other critters will abound

A light dinner of finger sandwiches, etc will be served.

2) BOOK SIGNING for Maine's Favorite Birds by Jeff and Allison Wells, Saturday, June 2nd.
4:00 to 6:00pm.

Jeff and Allison will tell us why they wrote the book and how they hope it will encourage beginning and intermediate birders to become more involved in the birding scene, including actions you can take to help protect birds.  They'll chat about your favorite birds, and share their own stories, like the one about birding in sub-zero temperatures in a VW Bug with no heat, about their role in the search for Ivory-billed Woodpeckers amidst poisonous snakes, about the Cornell Lab's failed attempt to employ a "secret weapon" in the World Series of Birding, and More.

They will be happy sign your new copy of their book, and of course, we will have plenty of copies on hand.

We look forward to seeing you soon,
Derek and Jeannette
