Visitors:
48 people visited the hawkwatch today. This is the most visitors we have noted in the park at this early date.

Weather:
Today was a lovely day to start the count. Winds were light overall out of the NW in the morning, switching to more northerly in the afternoon, with a few gusts. Temperatures started out just above freezing, ending in the low 40s. Skies were mostly sunny throughout the day. The trail up to the summit is ice-free!

Raptor Observations:
Today's total was the highest number of migrant raptors we have ever counted at this site on the first day. The flight was fairly evenly divided between Turkey Vultures, Bald Eagles, Red-shouldered Hawks, and Red-tailed Hawks. Even though most birds were far, a gorgeous Red-shouldered Hawk passed close over the summit with 20 minutes to go. Not a bad way to begin the count!

Non-raptor Observations:
We were busy with migrating raptors today, but did observe a few other species. The day ended with 25 species. Birds deemed migrating included: 29 Canada Geese 20 American Goldfinches 10 European Starlings 2 Purple Finches 1 Hooded Merganser 1 Eastern Bluebird

Predictions:
Tomorrow will be on the chilly side, with temperatures not forecast to be higher than 35F. However, winds will be light out of the North in the morning which could certainly mean birds may be moving. But, a shift to the southeast in the afternoon may slow things down a bit. -Jeannette and Derek
