Could your mystery bird possibly be a tufted titmouse? I'm sure you're familiar with several of their sounds, but their repertoire is huge, as I keep learning. I have definitely had some experiences recently that made me think, "wow, they make that sound, too?!" Your description and comparison to a cardinal brought TUTI to my mind first.
