Re: [Maine-birds] Common Loons gathering, Crawford Pond, Union

Interesting. We were out on our boat on Saturday and right near the Nubble Lighthouse we saw several loons. So, we stopped the boat and just floated. Then we realized there were thousands of mackerel (I think) all around us. Then shortly after we heard the blow sounds. A pod of pilot whales were feeding all around us. Always watch the loons!

This evening while visiting family on Crawford Pond in Union, there were eight loons hanging out together just offshore. We've seen rafts of them (up to 10 or 11 at a time) on that pond in late summer, but never this early in the season. A bachelor's party, perhaps?
