It seems the gullage has settled into a predictable species ratio on the ice floes in the Kennebec. Once again, today, the Herring Gulls (ca 300 of them) were host to a pale ad Iceland Gull and an imm (1cy? to 2cy?) Glaucous Gull. These have been fairly easy to spot floating on the ice.
But soon after seeing this group resting near the North Boat Landing, I shot over to the landfill, where hundreds more were circling over the pile. It appears that one segment of the pop. has broken off relations with the entire bunch, and prefers to spend time by themselves. Or so it seems. It is with this latter, smaller group, that a smallish, dark-backed gull has been seen lately. May or may not be a Less-Back.
Oh...and the ice? It has packed up tight as a drum up in the narrow spot near the north end of Washington Av. We need the Coast Guard to get their icebreaker up there so we can resume the gull escalator show, up & down the river.
