[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 1/19-24

Hi all,

 

My observations of note from the past seven days include:

 

- 3 Lesser Scaup, Princess Point, Yarmouth, 1/19 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk Group).

- 650+ Canada Geese between Yarmouth Harbor and the Cumberland Town Landing. A rather high count, 1/19 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk Group).

- 1 DOVEKIE, 44 Razorbills (high), 48 Red-necked Grebes (very low), 12 Sanderlings, and 13 Snow Buntings, Reid State Park, Georgetown, 1/21 (with Kristen Lindquist.  Dovekie photos at: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.561795817183710.139561.198877036808925&type=1).

- 1 first winter Glaucous Gull and 1 adult Iceland Gull, Bath dump, 1/21 (with Kristen Lindquist).

- 1 Northern Flicker and 1 Pine Grosbeak, Capisic Pond Park, Portland, 1/22 (with Jeannette).

- 3 drake CANVASBACKS continuing, Stroudwater Crossing, Portland, 1/22 (with Jeannette.  Her photo at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/freeportwildbird/8411569105/in/set-72157625893020187).

- 13-15 first winter, and 1 3rd winter Iceland Gull, Portland Harbor, 1/22 (with Jeannette).

- 1 female AMERICAN WIGEON continuing, Fore River at Paulin Tire, Sout Portland, 1/22 (with Jeannette).

- 1 drake CANVASBACK continued in the Royal River at Yarmouth Harbor through 1/23, but had departed from the limited amount of open water as of 1/25.  All three merganser species continue however

- all three merganser species were also at the Cousin's River, behind the Muddy Rudder restaurant on Roue One on 1/23 through today.

- 3 Belted Kingfishers, 1/23: one each at Grist Mill Park in Yarmouth, the Cousin's River at the Muddy Rudder, and the Freeport yacht club.

- 1 female CANVASBACK, Presumpscot River from I-295 N, 1/25.  I did not slow down enough to see if the drake continues here, or have time to check the open water from Route 9.
