I drove much further than I normally would to chase the reliable Townsend's Warbler that has been visiting John Wyatt and Debbie Ryan's home in Winterport only to have it be a no-show. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't disapointed, but John and Debbie's hospitality made the trip worthwhile. John came out and invited us in just as we were getting out of the car! They even gave my 2 year old son his second guitar, an old mandolin. He just got a ukulele for his birthday a few months ago.
Although the TOWA wasn't there and the flock(s) of Redpolls were not there, I did see 4 personal FOY birds including the continuing Baltimore Oriole, 2 Red-Breasted Nuthatches, a female Red-Bellied Woodpecker, and a male American Kestrel that John told me to check for on the way out at junction 139/69. I also enjoyed a spectacular view of the Penobscot River and Bay from their home and at one point there were 3 Bald Eagles circling high and in the same binocular field of view.
I can't thank John and Debbie enough for being such great hosts to me, my son, and countless other birders.
Bird haahd,
Noah Gibb-Portland
