I read this paper some time ago and -- at last! -- a chance to laugh up my sleeve concerning the often ridiculous splits that are all the rage today. I should indicate I'm not an expert on taxonomy, just an OLCO (old coot) that scratches his head at what passes for species delineations in this current age of splitting hairs. Many of which will most likely be lumped again when splitting goes out of mode.
Sorry but I can't help it. OLCOs need to expound their thoughts every now and then, too.

Hi all,
I read this post about the validity of Hoary Redpoll as a species with interest on the ABA Blog, and noticed it is making the rounds of the listserves. I thought folks on ME-Birds might be interested in reading it as well:
From Northwestern Crows to "Newfoundland" Robins, our attempt to compartmentalize nature and draw black-and-white lines about species, subspecies, and even "distinct population segments" isn't always as clear as we would like.
