[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

Our temperature took a brief nose dive but surfaced above the freezing mark again yesterday long enough to melt the small amount of icy sheen that accumulated during the weather change. We saw -3C overnight but we're back up to +4C today.
It's always interesting to note the temperature differences between here, Grand Manan and the Mainland.
At one point yesterday we were 13 degrees C warmer that Grand Manan Airport, 19 degrees C warmer than Saint Stephen Airport and 16 degrees C warmer than Point Lepreau.

As I predicted Thursday, we picked up new species taking advantage of our bare ground.
1 HORNED LARK and 2 FOX SPARROWS arrived Yesterday, as well as 5 more ROBINS and another STARLING.
SNOW BUNTINGS are now over 150 and they've developed a taste for white millet. Fun to have that many feeding just outside the livingroom window and they are getting more tolerent of human movement outside.

The Boxing Day Rough Legged Hawk did stay over night and offered some good viewing as it ground-perched a short distance from the house.

"Our" SNOWY OWL continues, apparently content with the victuals that the island offers.
