Thursday I witnessed a hawk landing on the snow right outside my studio window, having just plucked a mourning dove from a flock in the orchard. He proceeded to pluck feathers and begin to feast, when several crows came around the corner of the house and chased him away. Not being an experienced birder, how do I tell if it was a sharp-shinned or a Cooper's? Size? Markings? Thanks!
