[Maine-birds] Weskeag Narsh & Owls Head

A Christmas day trip to Weskeag Marsh and Owls Head in the bright sun with ice glistening all around us yielded some fun birds. There were two Rough-legged Hawks at Weskeag. One was an adult light phase, but with much dark on it, and another which appeared to be a dark phase juvenile put on a good show, gliding and kiting over the marsh. They were joined by a Common Raven, and at least a dozen Snow Buntings, two of which landed in the parking area next to our car. The cherry on top was a calling Eastern Bluebird.

At the impoundment in Owls Head Harbor there were 6 Iceland Gulls, including a couple of adults, plus a Black-Headed Gull, a Bonaparte’s, and the usual supply of Ring-Billed, Herring, and Blacked-Backed. The lack of people milling about the area made it easier to count the Icelands. I’ve never seen so many in one spot. No Snowy by the airport.
