[Maine-birds] Red-headed Woodpecker and more.

Maine birders!

Sorry for the delayed post but I had limited internet access the past few days. Dave Hof and I decided to take a little vacation from MA to do some birding in Maine. On 12/18 we birded Olgunquit, Biddeford Pool and Cape Elizabeth, highlights being Purple Sandpipers, Harlequin Ducks and 2-3 Snowys at Biddeford Pool. One interaction included 2 Snowys vocalizing and fighting, talons locked in mid-air. On 12/19 we spent the morning searching for the Northern Hawk Owl. It took us 3.5 hours but we finally found the bird on the telephone wires by the local NAPA. Other highlights included a flock of Common Redpolls and 2 Northerns Shrikes. On 12/20 we started the day at Quoddy Head, highlights being good numbers of Black-legged Kittiwakes and Razorbills. Later in the day we stopped at Great Wass Island. While driving down Black Duck Cove Rd. Dave spotted a Melanerpes species on a telephone poll. We quickly pulled over near Forest Ln. and I was able to get a few photos of a Juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker! The bird seemed to be caching food in a couple of snags and telephone polls in the area and it certainly seemed like it was sticking around the area. Also of interest on Great Wass was a Merlin. Our last day was yesterday and our best site was Schoodic Point. Highlights included a very obliging Great-horned Owl, some Razorbills, and 4 Red-necked Grebes.

Again sorry for the delay.
