There are now at least three Rough-legged Hawks at the Weskeag Marsh in S. Thomaston. We saw two from the parking area on Buttermilk Lane, and another by the headwaters of Weskeag not far from the Lonza factory. None were dark phase, although two of them had extensive black on their breasts and bellies. I’m wondering if the suspected dark phase juvie I believed I saw yesterday was a trick of the light, as I was viewing it against the sun. Has anyone else ventured down to see them? We had really marvelous views of these birds today, just as the snow was revving up. They are incomparably beautiful!
