Small amounts of grains/seeds are ok, large volumes can cause indigestion/rumen acidosis in ruminants which can be deadly, especially if animal is not accustomed to eating easily digestible carbs and gorges on feed.

Below is a link to a BDN article on the subject. Apparently "large quantities" of un-hulled sunflower seeds are bad, can even be deadly, to deer in the winter. Apparently hulled ones are OK, at least the article does not say otherwise.
