The bird was a large raptor, well bigger than a crow and more like a harrier in size. It was flying directly toward us--which is to say not hunting--from the northeast along the river . The body was rather tubular-shaped and the wings were proportionally shorter than a harrier's, leading to a quicker wingstroke.
The bird crossed the river and landed for a matter of seconds in a bare tree of the house immediately to the west of the the parking area. Our view was of the back and obscured so not much to say about it. It continued in to the west, perhaps along the treeline. My guess is that it was headed to a roost site somewhere along that shore.
Good luck all!
