[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

The birding has been relatively quiet for the past few days but there
have been a few more wanderers than usual.
Notable was a bunch of RED BREASTED NUTHATCHES. Normally we see 1 or 2
at a time. I counted 6 RB Nuthatches and 1 WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH
around the buildings. It seems that allor most are still here this
morning.

A couple days ago we had a MERLIN hunt throughout the day with some
success. We seldom see that species once the migrants move through.

PEREGRINES have also been active. Most days we see at least one and
many days there are two around. Yesterday a few of the tourists got to
witness the lightning demise of a PUFFIN when a Peregrine came
shopping for a carry-away lunch.

The other usual raptors, the EAGLES, have been nearly absent for a few
days. Unusual after months of almost constant presence.

A KINGBIRD has been hanging around for several days and starting
yesterday, it's been joined by a bright male BLUEBIRD hawking small
insects around the lawns. Both are still present today.

A LITTLE BROWN BAT has been day-light active recently, especially in
the afternoon. It's fun to see small butterflies chasing the bat,
sometimes ganging up in 2s & 3s and effectively chasing the much large
predator away.

The Alcid hatch is getting well under way and we are seeing increasing
amounts of food coming ashore. So far, just from casual observation,
the size and species look good.
