Stubby-billed female Hoary Redpoll just appeared with 60 Common Redpolls. Like most of the Hoary Redpolls here in recent years, the bird is not super conspicuous but appears paler gray on the back - it's not a "white" back but certainly not brown as on Common. The throat and cheeks are really buffy, rump and undertail coverts are white and the wingbar is broadly white. This bird has thin flank streaks. it's so much easier to look at these flighty redpolls at a feeder.
On another matter, there has been an incursion of many robins in Richmond and Dresden in the past 10 days and these are probably birds from further north. I've seen one black-backed Atlantic Canada or "newfie" robin. Worth looking at robin flocks.
Best, Peter
