[Maine-birds] Merrymeeting Audubon South Coastal Field Trip

Today, a successful Merrymeeting Audubon field trip to a variety of south coastal sites was conducted by Maurice and Cathie Dauphin.  Highlights included Razorbills and Harlequin Ducks at Cliff House, up close observations of 24 Harlequin Ducks and 39 Purple Sandpipers from Marginal Way at Perkins Cove, and a Brant and Peregrine Falcon at the Biddeford Pool boat launch park.

The Peregrine was in the process of finishing lunch on a rock outcropping along the shoreline.  It was noted the falcon's feathers appeared wet on the chest and belly.  Subsequent examination of the prey remains, which consisted of a few bones and small elongated dark wings with a white trailing edge to the secondaries, was made by Chuck Huntington.  Without hesitation, Chuck said "Dovekie".

The final highlights of the day were 4 Ruddy Turnstones with Purple Sandpipers on rock outcroppings along Ocean Avenue near the East Point Sanctuary, and a Snowy Owl on Wood Island.  The Snowy Owl, a heavily marked individual, was perched on the chimney of the keeper's house at the Wood Island Lighthouse.  The bird was easily viewed from the East Point Sanctuary.

Good birding,

Gordon
