This morning when I looked out my back window I saw 7 Ravens flying and
soaring together, some very close together. I have had Ravens nesting
behind my house here in Scarborough for many years but I have never seen
this many birds at once here. I know about and have observed "helper"
birds from a previous brood with the breeding adults but only one at a
time. Is this a "family reunion" of related birds? I don't know of any
Raven roost nearby although I do know of a couple of additional nest
sites within 3 and 5 miles from here. The birds start visiting the nest
site area about this time of the year with increasing regularity.
It is really a treat to see their courtship behavior including close
tandem flying. Once I saw the pair on the ground side by side where one
would jump over the other. Another time I saw two birds lock feet and
fall straight down out of sight behind the trees. I don't know if that
was courtship or territorial dispute. They certainly are interesting birds.
