Mount Desert Island Birds: Greater Scaup

Comments: Hunters were standing out in the water with a boat patrolling and two guys on the beach. A male White-winged Scoter flew by which they shot. It went down slowly but was not dead. When the Retriever got to it the Scoter was breathing its last breaths sitting on top of the water wondering what just happen to it's life! Greater Scaup was the treat today. 39F, wind out of the Northwest and steady. We are getting ready for another Arctic blast which should drive some birds our way.

White-winged Scoter (Melanitta fusca) 7 Hunters were shooting ducks at Hadley this morning and they shot a male WWSC.... very sad to see it flying than falling to the water where it was picked up by a dog.

Comments: Stopped to see if there were any good birds... This location has a tide pool and a winding tidal stream flowing into a tidal marsh. An excellent place for birds but quiet today.
