[Maine-birds] Capisic Pond Park public meeting

Jeff Scher, a member of Portand's Park Commission and a board member for the Friends of Capisic Pond Park, asked me to pass this along: 

 

"As you may be aware of, the community has been working with the city to save what is left of Capisic Pond before the open water is gone for good.  There has been a lot of positive progress made on this project.  The city is hosting a public meeting on the project on 12.19.13 from 6:30 - 8:30PM.  We would love it if you or any of your birding community might be able to attend?  I know it is a super busy time of the year but if it is possible to attend that would be great.  If there are others in your community that may be interested, please share the info below with them."

 

"The City will be hosting a public meeting about the Capisic Pond Park projects on December 19, 2013 from 6:30-8:00 PM at the Deering High School cafeteria.  This meeting will include a presentation of the latest design plans (80% plus), an overview of the upcoming regulatory process and a review of the schedule for each project. "

 

While I have decidedly mixed feelings about this phase of the project, I will not be able to participate in the proceedings at this time, and I have not followed the debate too closely.  Even if you don't have strong feelings for or against "pond restoration" here (essentially, it's about trying to restore the open water of the pond through dredging and perhaps other methods), since so many of us birders enjoy Capisic Pond Park so much, it behooves us to stay abreast of the happenings here.  Afterall, we don't want to have to scramble to action when a plan gets put forth without our input as happened a few years ago when the replacement of the sewer line could have permanently reduced the value of the park to birds and birding.
