[Maine-birds] Pink-Footed Goose - more info

The PFGoose reported yesterday at the end of Sabino Rd continues this morning.  There are a number of viewing possibilities.  At the end of the road is a Public Boat Landing (very steep ramp).  If the flock is out among the moored boats off this landing (in Mill Cove), this will be easy.  Scope from water's edge.

For the last 200 yards before the landing (after passing the "Sabino Hall") , look to the left from Sabino Rd, through the gaps in the cottages along there.  If the geese are in the little cove, you can scope them from the road.

If the goose flock is off the point (end of a private road "Close Reach") you will see a very small parking lot.  You may park there (but not overnight).  My neighbor is very accommodating...even offering to plow the parking lot.  He also doesn't mind if you cross his property to get a better view.  But I hope you don't have to avail yourselves of this option. It shouldn't be necessary.  And it may serve to spook the flock.  They are wild birds and not habituated to people.

Having said that, conditions this morning for examining the bird and for photography have been  horrendous.  I did so-so shooting out of my neighbor's kitchen window, even keeping my camera dry.  You should be so lucky.  Before that, I tried to get close enough to even see the bird in question across a camp road off Sabino Rd.  Miserable.

My neighbor says the flock has been here for 2 or 3 days.  They are noisy overnight.  Their favo loafing spot is now covered in 9" of snow, so may no longer be attractive to them.  I still think there's a second bird among this flock that might be a Grtr White-fronted Goose.  Had a brief look yesterday and could see no mottling on the bill.

Finally, snow has obviously changed the parking situation considerably along the road and at the landing.  If you get terribly frustrated, you can always park at my house (241 Sabino) and walk down.    Thanks to Robin and the other CBCers for finding this bird.
