[Maine-birds] Greater Portland CBC Summary

The Greater Portland CBC took place this past Saturday, December 15 with 49 birders notching 102 species, plus 3 for count week. Totals of individuals were uniformly low, perhaps owing to the mild weather on count day, lack of snow cover, and the early-season freeze-up of standing water. In fact, the only high counts were Carolina Wren and Winter Wren with 10 and 3 birds respectively. Among the notable sightings was, of course, the Great Black Hawk, the 200th species for this count circle over the past 40 years. Singles of Barrow's Goldeneye, Dovekie, Red-shouldered Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Snowy Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Northern Shrike, Pine Grosbeak, Lincoln's Sparrow, and Dickcissel added to the total. A fun day!

Cheers and good birding,

Bill Hancock
