The Waterville area Christmas Bird Count was completed on Sunday, December 16. 60 species were reported---57 species on count day and 3 for count-week.
Although winter finches were abundant earlier in the season, the numbers were down for the day. 15 Evening Grosbeaks, 20 Pine Grosbeaks and 4 Pine Siskins. Bohemian Waxwings were abundant.
Record highs: Mallards, Wild Turkeys, Red-bellied Woodpecker and Northern Cardinal.
Notables: A Barred Owl, Merlin, Yellow-shafted Flicker, Fox Sparrow, Snow Bunting, Belted Kingfisher, Rusty Blackbird, 2 Peregrine Falcons, 5 Eastern Bluebirds and a first-ever Baltimore Oriole. Among the throng of American Crow was a leucistic crow, difficult to pick out as he sat in the snow. Horned Lark and Lapland Longspur appeared for count week.
