Re: [Maine-birds] Great Black Hawk - Yes, 22 Dec

The Hawk was present on Thursday morning the 20th at the intersection of Deering and Park Avenue providing excellent views to a small group of birders who were on the pathway on the north side of Park Ave.
Around 1130 a tall man wearing a black coat and red pants approached the group and told us we were blocking the pathway and needed to step aside. The birders complied and he departed.
The Hawk flew down to the ground under an evergreen tree and proceeded to feed on a squirrel carcass.
The man returned, threw a snowball at the bird and berated us for "impeding passage for blind people who frequently use this walkway."
A verbal confrontation ensued and after a few minutes the man left.
His actions caused the Hawk to fly off with part of the carcass to an area under some trees 150 yards away and continue feeding there.
On leaving the area I noticed a police officer on Park Ave talking to the man.
I am reporting this incident to make birders aware of this individual who may wish to harm the Hawk.

There have been a few reports on eBird and various Facebook groups that the Great Black Hawk is being seen back up Deering Ave, at 134 Grant Street this morning, 22 Dec.

Hope this helps,

Any one have any news about the hawk? We're thinking of making the trek down to Portland tomorrow.

Thanks!
