Re: [Maine-birds] GBH

Doug reminds me that the correct abbreviation for Great Black Hawk is actually GBLH.

GBHA refers to Grey-bellied Hawk, much of whose range overlaps with that of Great Black Hawk in South America. [Keep your eyes peeled?!?]

Good birding,

Ah, of course!

Well, yes, while the incorrect abbreviation DID manage to remind me of the Great Blue Heron I meant to report yesterday, it is also the perfect example of why, if one chooses to use banding codes in a post, 1. one uses the correct code (these are not simply random abbreviations; and there is an app to look them up), and 2. use of the code should always be preceded by the actual written-out name of the bird to avoid any possible confusion.

(We've had long back-and-forths on this list-serve about whether banding codes should be used at all, but I don't think we need to go there right now.)

Thank you!

I think there's a slight misinterpretation going on here:

GBHA  Great Black Hawk

GBHE Great Blue Heron

I, too, had a Great Blue Heron today. This morning, about 8:45, I saw one fly across the road in Blue Hill, near the landfill.

This reminds me, a Great Blue Heron was seen flying over Route 1 in Rockport yesterday, as well.
