For what it's worth: I received an excited call from a Kennebunk resident who knows the common birds. She reported "...late yesterday afternoon (i.e. Friday, 12/14) there was a very large dark hawk perched on the wire above route 1.in Kennebunk". She said she turned around at CVS and drove back to look at it. She described it as huge, with a light colored breast. She said she thought it might be the Great Black Hawk she had been hearing about. When I suggested Red-tailed she said "it did not have a red tail". She did not snap a photo and could not provide other useful details or field marks. If the bird is AWOL who knows where it might be...
