[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights and Shorebird High Counts This Week, 8/8-14


Hi all,
My other observations of note over the past seven days included the following: 
- This Week in Fly-over Red Crossbills: 1-2, Spear Farm Estuary Preserve, Yarmouth, 8/8 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group); 1, our yard in Pownal, 8/9; 1, Viles Arboreteum, Augusta, 8/11; 1 Togus Pond South End, Augusta, 8/11; several scattered, Togus Pond North End, 8/11. One at Bradbury Mtn State Park on 8/13 was actually feeding in White Pines at the summit.
- 2 juvenile Little Blue Herons, Spear Farm Estuary Preserve, 8/8 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).
- 1 continuing TRICOLORED HERON X SMALL WHITE EGRET SP(S) , Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
- 1 juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS (FOY), Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).

And with shorebird migration in full swing (peaking for adults of many species in fact), these are my high counts over the past week:
Black-bellied Plover: 79, Wharton Point, Brunswick, 8/9
Semipalmated Plover: 442, Pine Point, Scarborough,  8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
Killdeer: 5, Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER: 5, Pine Point,  8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
Whimbrel: 3, Pine Point,  8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
STILT SANDPIPER: 2 (1 ad and 1 FOY juv.), Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).  1 juv. from the road on 8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
Sanderling: 1, Pine Point, 8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
White-rumped Sandpiper: 42, Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
Pectoral Sandpiper: 16, Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
Semipalmated Sandpiper: ~500, Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
Short-billed Dowitcher: 6, Eastern Road Trail, 8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
Spotted Sandpiper: 4, 250th Anniversary Park, Brunswick, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
Greater Yellowlegs: 9, Wharton Point, 8/9.
"Eastern" Willet: 7,  8/12 (with Downeast Adventures Shorebird Workshop group).
Lesser Yellowlegs: 64, Eastern Road Trail, 8/10 (with Jeannette).
