[Maine-birds] Western Sandpiper, Red Knots Biddeford Pool

At Hill's beach in Biddeford this morning there was a Western Sandpiper halfway in between Surf Ave and the roadside parking for the beach. It was seen at about 7:30 (sorry for the late notice - I couldn't figure out how to send this out from a phone), and was a very obvious Juvenile with red scapulars and a long, drooped bill. The whole group of SESA along with the WESA was moving around a lot and it might have flown into the pool. No sign of the Lesser Black-Backed Gull that had been seen, although I wasn't making an effort to search for it.

Later, at the intersection between Bridge Rd and Mile Stretch Rd there were four Juv Red Knots hanging out on the flats closest to the intersection - perhaps a few hundred feet away, but they gave fairly good looks. Thanks to Shane for pointing them out to me - I would have missed them. This was at about 8:30. They flew together towards Hill's Beach after watching them for about 20 minutes - I didn't see where they landed.

Also seen during the morning were:
Semipalmated Sandpipers  - a few hundred at both the Pool and Hill's Beach
Least Sandpipers - some at Hill's Beach
Semipalmated Plovers - about 65 at Hill's beach, some distant ones around the pool
Black-Bellied Plovers - a few dozen scattered throughout mostly the pool
Short-Billed Dowitchers - a few dozen in the Pool across the road from Surf Ave
White-Rumped Sandpipers - 15-20 scattered among SESA at Hill's Beach
Willets - a few across from Hill's Beach and a few at Miles Stretch Rd.
Lesser Yellowlegs - 3 across from Hill's Beach
Greater Yellowlegs - 1 across from Hill's Beach
Killdeer - 1 Hill's beach
Ruddy Turnstones - 2 Hill's Beach
Sanderlings - 3 on far sandbars Hill's Beach

A great morning!

Happy birding,
Matthew Gilbert
