[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights and Shorebird High Counts, 8/15-21.



Hi all,

Just a few highlights this week that were not shorebirds!

- Red Crossbill fly-overs: 1, over the store, 8/17 (our 128th Yard Bird!); 1, Spear Farm Estuary Preserve, Yarmouth, 8/21.

- 1 Great Egret, Androscoggin River in Durham, 8/19 (with Jeannette). 

- 1 Common Nighthawk (FOF), over the store, 8/20.

- 2 continuing juv Little Blue Herons, Spear Farm Estuary Preserve, 8/21.

But despite only a few shorebirding outings this week, it was a good week for shorebirds and these are my high counts:

Black-bellied Plover: 112, Wharton Point, Brunswick, 8/18 (with Jeannette).

Semipalmated Plover: 204, Pine Point, Scarborough, 8/20.

Killdeer: 22, Mayall Road, Gray/New Gloucester, 8/21.

Whimbrel: 3, Pine Point, 8/20.

Sanderling: 2, Pine Point, 8/20.

DUNLIN: 1 early juvenile (FOS), Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.

Least Sandpiper: 300+, Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.

White-rumped Sandpiper: 46, Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.

Pectoral Sandpiper: 3,  Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.

Semipalmated Sandpiper: ~550,  Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.

WESTERN SANDPIPER: 3 different juveniles this week! 1 (FOY), Eastern Road Trail, 8/17; 1, Wharton Point, Brunswick, 8/18 (with Jeannette; my 2nd ever here); and 1, Pine Point, 8/20.

Short-billed Dowitcher: 22, Pine Point, 8/20.

Spotted Sandpiper: 2, Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.

Solitary Sandpiper: 1, Greely Road, Cumberland, 8/21.

Lesser Yellowlegs: 74, Eastern Road Trail, 8/17. 

"Eastern" Willet: 12, Pine Point, 8/20.

"WESTERN" WILLET: 1 juv, Pine Point, 8/20.

Greater Yellowlegs: 19, Eastern Road Trail, 8/17.
