Ellen Blanchard found a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW today (19 October) at her feeders in Abbot. It was seen throughout the day and up until dark, so chances are good (or hopes are high) that it'll stick around.
Ellen is willing to have visitors and here are a few things you should know if chasing:
The feeders are behind the camp house (lake side) at 184 Pond Road in Abbot. Google Maps does not plot this address correctly (though Apple Maps does), so I recommend using this link: https://goo.gl/maps/ysSVEbdAJXu3mqWEA, the lat/long: 45.2162055,-69.5477061, or the maps link from Ellen's eBird checklist (https://ebird.org/checklist/S75106846) to get there. Please park on the dirt side road that runs north‐south at this point and walk down the driveway to avoid blocking cars. Ellen's house is beige but more obvious is probably the large dumpster currently in the driveway. There are a few chairs set up near the corner of the house, which is where birders should look from. The bird spent all day around her feeders and the neighbor's feeders in the adjacent yard (to the south) but viewing is best from Ellen's yard. (Please don't go in other peoples' yards…)
Folks may remember Ellen for hosting Maine's third record of Lesser Goldfinch during 3-5 August 2015. She graciously opened her yard then too but that bird was less cooperative than this one hopefully will be. Another great rarity, Maine's past records of Golden-crowned Sparrows (although most not yet reviewed by the Maine Bird Records Committee) are available here: https://sites.google.com/site/mainebirdrecordscommittee/official-list-of-maine-birds/gcsp This is a review species, so please consider sending your notes and documentation to the records committee!
