[Maine-birds] Western Kingbird, Freeport 4:15 PM

Western Kingbird continues at 4:15 PM. It was seen on the first field as you drive north down Hunter Road past railroad tracks on the right hand side. But then it flew over the house and was in some trees to the left of the house and then back again to the first field.

Hi all,

Michael Boardman, Matthew Stuart, and I were able to confirm the probable WESTERN KINGBIRD found earlier this morning by Dan Nickerson on Hunter Road in Freeport. The bird was working the edge of a farm field on the east side of the road, often perching in snags very close to the road, a short distance west of I-295.

Taking Hunter Road from Desert Road at Exit 20 of I-295, after the 90-degree bend, the field is on the right just past the railroad tracks and Farmview Road. It is best to park near here, and walk downhill to the northwest. The bird was often in leafless aspens in the wet swale on the right. But Dan had it further out (hence the "probable" designation) in the field on both sides of the farmhouse.

There's also some space to park safely on the left at the bottom of the hill after passing the farmhouse. The shoulder in between is very steep, very narrow, and cars fly up and over these blind hills so be very careful. And as always, please respect private property by not entering the fields or yards.

-Derek
