Re: [Maine-birds] Another opportunity for Bicknell's Thrush?

Thank you Bob.

Should  folks  wish to drive themselves on  the  MWAR ,   or   actually  hoof it  fully  on foot by hiking trail (  and  not  partake of the   Bicknell Thrush   guided  tour  opp),   or  combine  their  own efforts  in the  DIY zone....  they  certainly have  those  opportunities, and all of  us who  man/woman  the   front  lines with the public in Pinkham Notch  at either  AMC or MWAR   can direct  them appropriately, within their preferred   circumstance,  whether  they seek the elusive  B. Thrush or the  Alpine  Garden.

I appreciate your thoughts and   candor.

Hi Sue,

I hope your knuckles aren’t rapped. I get asked all the time where visiting birders should get the thrush. I do have several recommendations in Maine, but I don’t hesitate to suggest the auto road tour in NH. There are many older folks who just can’t otherwise get to the proper habitat. Personally, I’m delighted to see the Mt. Washington Auto Road commercializing this opportunity. That’s what nature-based tourism is all about – placing more economic value on our natural resources so that we will care enough not to ruin them. It’s basically the same discussion we just finished about shade grown coffee. The more we care about nature, both ethically and economically, the more we are likely to change our behaviors in order to protect it.

This  may be  a controversial post, and I apologize in  advance if  I  ruffle feathers.   I  am employed  by   the  Mt Washington Auto Road, but not  in Marketing . I do not book,  conduct  or personally profit from these tours.  Obviously my employer does, thus the  open  disclaimer.  I'm  not  trying to  sneak anything.

I'm  surely aware that   Mt  Washington is NOT in Maine.     I'm offering the  information just  to keep Maine Birders   in the loop  about  another  opportunity to seek and  sight  a rare  life  bird.   I'm personally conflicted  and  hesitant  about offering the information here, and if   a Moderator feels it is  inappropriate, I will fully understand if the  post is  deleted and my fingers   rapped for  commercial advertising.

Sue in West  Bethel.
