[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week Plus, 12/31-1/7

Hi all,

Additional observations of note from in the past 8 days include:

 

- 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker, Winston Hill, Freeport, 12/31.

- 1 drake Barrow's Goldeneye, Freeport Town Wharf, etc, 1/1 (with Jeannette).  By 1/5, a female joined it (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk Group). 

- 7 Iceland Gulls (6 first winter and 1 adult), Old Port, Portland, 1/4.

- 1 THICK-BILLED MURRE, Freeport Town Wharf and nearby yacht club, 1/5 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).  Incredibly far from open ocean (my first anywhere in Casco Bay away from Portland).  The amazing sighting became even more remarkable when it was attacked by a Great Black-backed Gull and then caught and killed by a Bald Eagle!  The whole story is here: http://www.freeportwildbirdsupply.com/bird_news.asp?id=1690#1690.

- 12 Hooded, 2 Common, and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers in Yarmouth Harbor on 1/2 decreased to 2 Common and 6 Hooded by 1/6 (with Kristen Lindquist).

- Scattered Pine Grosbeaks continue with up to 9 birds most days at the Pine Tree Academy on Pownal Road in Freeport.

- 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker continues in our Pownal yard.

- scattered few Common Redpolls here and there continue.
